Roofing Ripoff Why Your Asphalt Shingles are Falling Apart and What You Can Do About It Tim Carter 9780998970905 Books
This short little book is clearly written and easy to follow. Jargon is kept to a minimum, and explained and illustrated as needed. Carter outlines his reasoning and takes the reader through each step to the conclusions. He explains the problem - asphalt shingles going bad in under ten years despite 30 year warranties - and how he tracked down what was going on. Excessive cost cutting and complex weasel worded warranties are at the root of the problem.Even if you've just put on a new roof, or don't plan on the big expense for a while, this is a very useful book for anyone who wants their asphalt shingles to do their job longer than 8 to 10 years. Carter will explain how to mitigate the problem even with your existing roof.
Your favorite local roofers may or may not be aware of the problems with the asphalt shingles, as the ripoff comes from the manufacturer's end. I'm not sure they could do anything even if they did.

Roofing Ripoff Why Your Asphalt Shingles are Falling Apart and What You Can Do About It Tim Carter 9780998970905 Books Reviews
Great information, well researched by a trusted, unbiased source. Easy reading.
Lots of great information from Tim Carter. He's been my go-to for house issues.
Short and to the point - nice book - really needed.
I subscribe to Mr. Carter's weekly e-newsletter, so I've followed the progression of this story as it happened, and eagerly awaited its publication. I'm not disappointed!
This book (I have the version) is written in a clear and easy to read style that explains technical issues without overwhelming the reader. The book covers the history of asphalt shingle manufacturing, comparing "then" to "now" in production techniques and materials. Think of this as Asphalt Shingles 101. Mr. Carter then explains what you should look for if you're buying new shingles, and a
DIY treatment that will extend the life of your shingles if you have a 7 year old or newer roof already installed.
I enjoyed reading this book, and highly recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about their roofing shingles.
If you need to know how to protect your roof, this is the book for you. It is an eye opener about protecting a pretty big investment that protects your home.
Interesting book, especially discussing the history of asphalt shingles. Includes some good advice on selecting a product and a roofing contractor. I though the discussion on warranties was very weak - he said its impossible to prove faulty materials and go the the manufacturers websites to compare the warranties. No discussion about how to file a claim, etc.
I haven't finished this, but so far the man is right on! I should have suspected this when the hurricane blew our shingles off, yet my parents only have 3 tab and with regular 100mph winds still haven't lost shingles in 20 years! I haven't got far enough to find out what to do about it, but as we have to re-roof in the next 5-7 years, I am going to be looking at metal or something more durable than asphalt. (I already knew that the warrenty only covers the tiny cost of the shingles and not the HUGE cost of installation! No sense wasting money on cheap roofing when the install is the real expense.)
